Weather in Malaga – March 2022

Cloudy Wet and often Stormy

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during March 2022 in Malaga was 18.2 Celsius (64F), and that was 0.9 Celsius (1.5 F) below normal for the time of year. Average day-time temperatures were lower than those recorded in February. The average minimum temperature was 11.8 Celsius (53F), and that was 0.4 Celsius (<1 F) above normal for March.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 23.1 Celsius (73F) on the 3rd, and there were only 4 other days when the temperature rose above 20 Celsius (68F). On the 12th a maximum of 21.2 Celsius (70F) occurred, and 22.7 Celsius (73F) was recorded on the 17th. The last 2 days of the month also had highs above 20 Celsius (68F). On most days (22) maxima were between 16 and 19 Celsius (61-66F), but there were 2 cooler days. On the 11th, the temperature only reached 15.4 Celsius (60F), and on the 15th the maximum temperature was 15.7 Celsius (60F).

There were no especially mild nights during March, but a minimum of 15.2 Celsius (59F) occurred on the 23rd, and 15.1 Celsius (59F) was measured on the 28th. A further 10 nights had minima between 13 and 15 Celsius (55-59F). No particularly cold nights occurred, but on 7 nights the minimum was below 10 Celsius (50F). All of these cooler nights occurred before mid-month. On 4 of the first 10 nights the temperature dipped below 9 Celsius (48F), but only 1 of these nights had a minimum below 8 Celsius (46F). That was on the 2nd, when 7.7 Celsius (46F) was recorded.

The sea temperature was between 15 and 16 Celsius (59-61F) throughout the month. 

Rain

There were 152.6 millimetres (6.1 ins.) of rain during March. That was more than 2.5 times the monthly average. Although it was only the wettest March since 2018, the total for the month exceeded the total for the previous 11 months combined. Measurable rain fell on 17 days, equalling the record for March set 4 years ago. In a normal March, rain can be expected on just 8 days. The first 2 days of the month were dry, but rain on the evening of the 3rd amounted to 1.6 millimetres (0.06 ins.). Light rain fell on the 7th, 11th and 13th, but on the 14th there was heavy rain at times until early afternoon. The total for the day was 35.8 millimetres (1.4 ins.) making it the wettest day of the month. A further 8.4 millimetres (0.3 ins.) of mostly light rain fell on the 15th, with heavy rain returning on the morning of the 16th to give 28 millimetres (1.1 ins.) for the day. Light rain early on the 17th was followed by 2 dry days, but then 5 consecutive days with rain occurred. On the 20th, a total of 6.2 millimetres (0.25 ins.) were measured, with 21.2 millimetres (0.8 ins.) falling on the 24th; another 35.2 millimetres (1.4 ins.) fell on the 25th. The rain on the evening of the 24th was heavily contaminated by Saharan ‘dust’ and a thick red, somewhat oily, layer was deposited on many horizontal and vertical surfaces. After 3 dry days, rain or showers fell on each of the last 3 days of the month, giving a combined total of 5.4 millimetres (0.2 ins.)  

Thunder

Thunder occurred on 3 days during March. On the 16th, thunder rumbled over Malaga for more than 2 hours. On the 20th, there was thunder for a while in the middle of the evening, and on the 20th thunder and lightning occurred overnight in association with the heaviest rain.

Wind

It was a windy month, with the strongest winds blowing from the northwest during the first half of March, and with east to southeast levanters blowing at times during the last fortnight of the month. Gusts exceeded 20 knots (23 mph) on 12 days, with northwesterlies producing gusts of 29 knots (33 mph) and 30 knots (34 mph) on the 4th and 14th respectively; and with east to southeasterlies giving gusts of 34-35 knots (39-40 mph) on the 23rd and 24th, followed by a gust of 40 knots (46 mph) on the 25th.  

Fog

No fog was observed in this part of Malaga during March.
