The average maximum temperature during August 2014 in Malaga was 29.7 Celsius (86F), and that was normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 21.4 Celsius (70F), and that was over 1 degree Celsius (2F) below the normal August value.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 38.2 Celsius (100F) on the 11th, but 2 days later, on the 13th, a maximum of 37,0 Celsius (99F) occurred. These were the only 2 days when the temperature exceeded 35 Celsius (95F), however there were 7 days with highs between 31 and 35 Celsus (88-95F), with a further 8 days having maxima between 30 and 31 Celsius (86-88F). There were only 7 days with maxima below 28 Celsius (82F), and the 26th, with a high of 27.1 Celsius (81F), was the only one of these cooler days that occurred after the 9th. On 3 consecutive days, the 6th, 7th and 8th, maxima were below 25 Celsius (77F), including a high of only 20.8 Celsius (69F) on the 7th. This was the coolest August day since records began in 2005.
There was 1 particularly warm night during August, the 12th/13th, when a minimum of 26.8 Celsius (80F) occurred. However, the night of the 22nd/23rd was also very warm with the minimum temperature for the day, 24.3 Celsius (76F), actually occurring at 2.20 in the afternoon! On most nights (19) minima were between 21 and 24 Celsius (70-75F) but on 9 nights temperatures fell below 20 Celsius (68F). All of these cooler nights occurred during the first 12 ‘days’ of August. In the early hours of the 5th, a minimum temperature of 17.9 Celsius (64F) occurred, and this was only 0.1 Celsius (0.2F) above the previous record low, registered in 2006. However, around dawn on the 7th, a new record did occur as the temperature dipped to 16.6 Celsius (62F).
The sea temperature was below average through most of the month, and much below at times. Although the readings were around 20 or 21 Celsius (68-70F) at the beginning of August, they soon dipped to around 18 or 19 Celsius (64-66F), and briefly, at the end of the first week, to a very cold 16 or 17 Celsius (61-63F) A slow recovery to between 20 and 22 Celsius (68-72F) occurred after mid month, and on the last few days of August sea temperatures reached a normal 24 to 25 Celsius (75-77F).
Rain in Malaga
There was not a hint of rain again in Malaga during August and no rain was observ ed in the Province. In Murcia, a light shower produced the minimum amount of measurable rain on the 17th, a mere 0.1 millimetres (Trace).
Thunder
There were no thunderstorms in Malaga during August.
Wind
There was the usual balance between light northwesterly land breezes overnight and during the mornings, and light or gentle southeasterly sea breezes during the afternoons and evenings. On the cool days the sea breezes arrived early, and on the hot days the land breeze persisted or briefly became a blustery southwesterly breeze running parallel to the beach. There were only 3 days when gusts exceeded 20 knots (23mph), the 1st, 13th and 14th. On the latter day a gust of 26 knots (30 mph) occurred in the early hours as a hot land breeze (the temperature was 30 Celsius (86F) at midnight), gave way to a much cooler breeze from the sea.
Fog
There was frequent sea fog between the 6th and 9th, and on the 7th in particular it was dense at times. Although patchy low cloud occurred on other occasions after the 9th, the only other fog was for a while on the late morning of the 29th.
