Rain in Malaga
There were 4.1 millimetres (0.16 ins) of rain measured during May, and this was only around 25% of the long-term average for the area. Measurable rain occurred on 3 days, around 1 day less than expected in May. However, the first measurable ‘rain’ was not caused by falling preciptiation but by wet sea fog depositing moisture on the rain-gauge. This occurred on the first night of the month and only produced 0.3 millimetres (0.01 ins). There was a shower on the afternoon of the17th, but it was too light to be measured, but rain early on the 21st, only in a short, sharp burst, was sufficiently heavy to give 2 millimetres (0.08 ins), and made it the wettest day of the month. The only other rain occurred late on the evening of the 31st when 1.8 millimetres (0.07 ins) was recorded.
Thunder
Thunderstorms developed north of Malaga during the late afternoon of the 31st and drifted south across the Costa del Sol during the evening The most intense storms appeared to be north and east of Malaga.
Wind
Although the wind was predominantly from the northwest during May, there were many afternoons when strong southwesterly sea breezes developed. The anemometer is sheltered from southwest winds so the true strength is unknown, but estimates based on the sea state suggest a force 6 or 7 was commonplace and this translates to speeds of 25 to 30 knots (30-35 mph) with gusts perhaps up to 40 knots (45 mph). There were a few afternoons with the more orthodox southeasterly sea breeze, but the only day when measured gusts exceeded 20 knots (23 mph) was on the 31st when a speed of 30 iknots (34 mph) was recorded in association with the thunderstorms.
Fog
Sea fog drifted from east to west along the coast early on the morning of the 1st but it then lifted into low cloud before dispersing late in the morning..
