There were 12 days overall with maxima exceeding 20 Celsius (68F), with 7 of these warmer temperatures occurring during the first 8 days of November. Highs above 20 Celsius (68F) also occurred on 4 consecutive days beginning on the 22nd, including a maximum of 22.7 Celsius (73F) on the 25th. There were no especially cool days during the month, although on 5 occasions the temperature failed to rise above 18 Celsius (64F). There were 3 consecutive cooler days beginning on the 27th, with 2 of these days having maxima below 17 Celsius (63F). However, the coolest day of the month was the 11th with a high of 16.1 Celsius (61F).There were no exceptionally warm nights during November, but on 8 nights the temperature remained above 15 Celsius (59F). On 4 of these warmer nights minima were above 16 Celsius (61F), including lows of 16.4 Celsius (62F) on both the 6th/7th and 22nd/23rd. Rain in Malaga
There were 132.5 millimetres (5.2 ins) of rain during November, and this was over 50% above the monthly average. It was the wettest November in west Malaga for 8 years. Measurable rain fell on 8 days, and that’s the normal for November. The first rain of the month fell early on the 4th. It was heavy at times and produced nearly 20 millimetres (0.8 ins). Rain in the early hours of the 9th was less heavy but still produced over 5 millimetres (0.2 ins) in total. The 11th, the coolest day of the month,was wet until early afternoon with 16 millimetres (0.6 ins) measured. A further 16 millimetres (0.6 ins) fell on the 14th with the rain concentrated in the mid morning and mid evening part of the day. There were then 9 dry days before mostly light rain fell early on the 24th. The 27th and 28th were both frequently wet with some very heavy bursts of rain. Rainfall totals for the 2 days were 35.8 millimetres (1.4 ins) and 33.5 millimetres (1.3 ins) respectively. The final rain of the month occurred in the form of light showers during the afternoon and evening of the 29th, but the total for the day was only 1.5 millimetres (0.06 ins).
Thunder
There was only 1 day in west Malaga when thunder was heard but there were 2 storms on that day, the 27th. The first one, during the morning, was associated with very heavy bursts of rain. The second one, during the afternoon will be long remembered. The worst of the weather missed the west Malaga weather station, but a waterspout developed east of Torremolimos and came ashore as a tornado and moved northwards. It destroyed a beach-side restaurant, uprooted trees and lifted the roof from the BP petrol service station close to the airport. Later in the afternoon, an intense hailstorm, east of Malaga, turned the ground white in Velez-Malaga.
Wind
November was an unusually gusty month with the balance between overnight land breezes and afternoon sea breezes largely absent. On 8 days there were gusts exceeding 20 knots (23 mph), with 25 knots (29 mph) from the east-southeast occurring ahead of a weather front on the 4th, and 29 knots (33 mph) from the northwest occurring behind the front on the 5th. An exceptional wind storm occurred on the evening of the 22nd. Skies were largely cloudy, but no rain fell, it was very dusty, presumably lifted sand or dust from North Africa, and it became very windy for a time with a full gale blowing. The sea was extremely rough and at 1900 hours there was a gust from east-southeast of 57 knots (65 mph). This was the highest gust in any month during 10 years of records. There were further gusts exceeding 45 knots (50 mph) during the evening and several trees in the area were either fatally damaged or uprooted. From late evening the wind eased down and the highest gust after midnight was 34 knots (39 mph). The morning thunderstorm on the 27th was associated with a gust of 30 knots (34 mph), and the following night was also wet and windy with a gust of 37 knots (42 mph) occurring in the early hours of the 28th.
Fog
There was no fog observed in this part of Malaga during November, although a combination of dust and spray reduced visibility close to fog limits on the evening of the 22nd.
