The average maximum temperature during October 2014 in Malaga was 25.4 Celsius (78F), and that was 2 degrees Celsius (3.5F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 17.5 Celsius (63F), and that was around 0.5 degrees Celsius (1F) above the normal October value. This was the warmest October at this site since records began in 2005.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 35.9 Celsius (97F) on the 22nd. This was a truly remarkable day. It was easily the warmest October day recorded at this site, beating the previous high of 32.8 Celsius (91F) recorded in 2009. It was also the 3rd warmest day of the year, with just 2 days in August warmer. At Malaga Airport, the temperature rose to 36.4 Celsius (98F). This was their warmest October day in 71 years of records, beating the previous high of 36.0 Celsius (97F) logged in 1952. What made it even more unusual was the fact that both the 21st and 23rd had modest temperature highs of 24 Celsius (75F). Although it would be difficult to prove, there is evidence that the very warm air had origins around the Caribbean and became entrained within the circulation of Hurricane Gonzalo, and as it swept across the north Atlantic as an ex-tropical depression, it dragged the area of very warm air with it across the more southerly latitudes before occluding out east of Spain as cooler Atlantic air overtook it. Perhaps foehn effect enhancement also occurred, as Almeria was the only other city in southern Spain where new records were set. There were no other maxima above 30 Celsius (86F) during October, and only 4 other days with highs above 27 Celsius (81F). These included a maximum of 29.3 Celsius (85F) on the 7th, and 28.1 Celsius (83F) on the 9th. There were only 6 days with maxima below 24 Celsius (75F), with all of these cooler days occurring between the 12th and 21st. The coolest day was the 12th with a high of 20.7 Celsius (69F), but the following day was only slightly less cool with a maximum of 21.3 Celsius (70F).
There were several very warm nights at the beginning of Occtober, with the 5 nights recording lows above 20 Celsius (68F) occurring before the 9th. On each of the first 3 nights, minima were above 21 Celsius (70F), including a low of 21.8 Celsius (71F) on the 1st/2nd. There were no particularly cool nights in October, although on 3 nights minima were below 15 Celsius (59F). The cooler nights tended to be towards the end of the month, although the lowest October value occurred around dawn on the 13th with a reading of 13.6 Celsius (57F).
Sea temperatures were pleasantly high throughout the month with daily readings between 19 and 21 Celsius (66-70F).
