Rain

There were 14.4 millimetres (0.6 ins.) of rain during April which was only 35% of the monthly average. It was the driest April for 7 years, and the second driest since records began in 2005. Measurable rain fell on 9 days, which was, in fact, 2 days above the average. The first rain of the month fell late in the afternoon on the 4th and continued into the evening. However, only 0.6 millimetres (0.02 ins.) were recorded, and although further rain occurred until mid-afternoon on the 5th, the total for the 5th was just 3.8 millimetres (0.15 ins.). Early rain on the 6th amounted to 0.2 millimetres (0.01 ins.), but this was followed by 5 dry days. Showers fell in the afternoon and evening of the 12th, with one more in the early hours of the 13th. However, only 1 millimetre (0.04 ins.) of rain was recorded. An interlude of 8 dry days was followed by the wettest day of the month. Occasional rain, mainly in the afternoon and evening, amounted to 4.4 millimetres (0.17 ins.) with rain in the early hours of the 23rd adding another 0.8 millimetres (0.03 ins.) to the monthly total. Showers in the evening of the 28th gave 3.4 millimetres (0.13 ins.), and as these showers decayed, they produced another 0.2 millimetres (0.01 ins.), and that was the last rain of the month.

Thunder

Thunder occurred once in April with just the one distant rumble to the north mid-afternoon on the 27th. However, there was lightning over the sea to the south on the evening of the 28th.

Wind

The usual combination of northwesterly land breezes and southeasterly sea breezes occurred on many days, although the unpleasant southwesterly wind that sometimes occurs in Spring and often raises sand on the beach occurred on 4 afternoons. The most persistent, and often strongest, northwesterly winds were associated with the highest temperatures, whereas the early onset of sea breezes produced the coolest days. On 6 days the maximum gusts were above 20 knots (23 mph), with 29 knots (33 mph) recorded in east-southeasterlies on the 4th, and 24 knots (28 mph) measured in the surprisingly cool northwesterlies on the 20th.

Fog

Early fog occurred on the 15th but it had cleared by mid-morning.
