Warm, and another completely dry month
Temperatures
The average maximum temperature during August 2019 in Malaga was 30.0 Celsius (86F), and that was 0.2 Celsius (<0.5F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 22.2 Celsius (72F), and that was 0.4 Celsius (<1F) below normal for August.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 40.2 Celsius (104F) on the 7th. This was the highest August temperature for 13 years. There were several other hot days during the second week of the month. Maxima exceeded 35 Celsius (95F) on 4 consecutive days commencing on the 9th. The hottest day was the 9th with 36.7 Celsius (98F), closely followed by the 11th with 36.6 Celsius (98F). There were 6 other days when the temperature rose above 30 Celsius (86F), with all of the warmer days occurring between the 7th and 23rd. On most other days (16) maximum temperatures were between 27 and 30 Celsius (81-86F), but on 3 other days, the 2nd, 4th and 17th, the temperature remained below 27 Celsius (81F). The coolest day was the 4th with a high of 26.3 Celsius (79F), although the 2nd was only 0.1 Celsius (<0.2) warmer.
As usual, most nights were warm during August. The warmest nights were the 19th and 21st when lows of 24.5 Celsius (76F) were recorded. The temperature fell no lower than 24.1 Celsius (75F) on both the 22nd and 26th, but on most nights (22) minimum temperatures were between 21 and 23 Celsius (70-73F). There were 3 slightly cooler nights, the 12th, 17th and 18th. The coolest of these nights was the 18th when the temperature dipped to 20.2 Celsius (68F).
The sea temperature slowly rose from an initial value of 19 or 20 Celsius (66-68F) to around 23 or 24 Celsius (73-75F) by mid month. Thereafter, a figure of 24 Celsius (75F) was typical, with 25 Celsius (77F) during the last week of August.
Rain
There was no rain in West Malaga during August. So far this year less than 69 millimetres (2.7 ins.) of rain have fallen, a deficit of over 75%. The last measurable rain fell on April 25th. In the north of Malaga province there were localised heavy downpours on the 26th, which included a tornado at Campillos, west of Antequera
Thunder
There was no thunder heard in west Malaga during August.
Wind
A weak northwesterly land breeze occurred on most nights during August, with sea breezes developing, usually from late morning, and not dying away until after dusk. Strengths were generally light or gentle, but on a few occasions, particularly during the second week, the land breeze was reluctant to give way, and a compromise fresh southwesterly developed in the afternoons, running parallel to the shoreline and lifting sand at times making it very uncomfortable for sunbathers. The highest recorded gusts occurred during the second week. On 3 occasions gusts exceeded 20 knots (23 mph), with 22 knots (25 mph) measured on the 12th.
Fog
There was sea fog for a while in west Malaga late on the morning of the 17th and for a while in the afternoon.
