Temperatures
The average maximum temperature during August 2022 in Malaga was 31.2 Celsius (88F), and that was 1.3 Celsius (2F) above normal for the time of year. No other month has had higher daytime temperatures since records began in 2005. The average minimum temperature was 23.2 Celsius (74F), and that was 0.6 Celsius (1 F) above normal for August.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 38.4 Celsius (101F) on the 13th. On 3 other occasions the temperature rose above 35 Celsius (95F), including a high of 36.5 Celsius (98F) on the 14th. There were 4 consecutive days, beginning on the 13th, with maxima above 35 Celsius (95F), an unprecedented spell of hot weather. Each of the first 17 days of August had maxima exceeding 30 Celsius (86F). Thereafter, it was less hot with 10 days having highs below 30 Celsius (86F). However, only 3 of these less hot days had maxima below 28 Celsius. The 21st had a high of 27.9 Celsius (82F), with 25.3 Celsius (78F) and 26.9 Celsius (81F) recorded on the 22nd and 25th respectively.
As usual, there were many uncomfortably warm nights in August, and on the 14th the temperature only fell to 27.5 Celsius (81F). On 3 of the 4 previous nights the temperature stayed above 25 Celsius (77F), with 26.5 Celsius (80F) occurring on the 13th. On most nights (20) the temperature fell to between 22 and 25 Celsius (72-77F). However, after the 17th a few cooler nights occurred, but the only night with a minimum below 20 Celsius (68F) was on the 22nd when 18.4 Celsius (65F) was recorded.
The sea temperature was mostly around 24 or 25 Celsius (75-77F), but it briefly rose to 27 or 28 Celsius (81-82F) during the second week, and fell to 23 Celsius (73F) for a while in the fourth week.
Rain
There were 1.4 millimetres (0.06 ins.) of rain during August. Although this was a trivial amount, it was enough to make the monthly total 4% above average. A little rain overnight on the 8th produced 0.2 millimetres (0.01 ins.) of rain, but on the 22nd it was a combination of dew and sea mist that deposited 0.4 millimetres (0.02 ins.) in the rain gauge The wettest day of the month was the 29th, when bursts of rain overnight gave a total for the day of 0.8 millimetres (0.03 ins.)
Thunder
Thunder occurred on 2 days during August. On the 8th, there was occasional thunder for about 40 minutes around dawn. On the 29th, high-level thundery activity began in the early hours, and then thunder and lightning occurred fairly infrequently for the following 8 hours.
Wind
The usual combination of northwesterly land breezes and southeasterly sea breezes occurred on most days, although generally at night winds were very light with the land breeze almost non-existent. Even during the hot weather, when sea breezes failed to materialise, winds were mostly light, and the highest gust recorded during the month was 18 knots (21 mph) on both the 14th and 16th.
Fog
Mist and sea fog occurred for much of the day on the 22nd, but it was of little depth, and it generally stayed sunny.
