Weather in Malaga – August 2023

                           Hot and Dry

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during August 2023 in Malaga was 31.3 Celsius (88F), and that was 1.3 Celsius (3 F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 23.4 Celsius (74F), and that was 0.8 Celsius (1.5 F) above normal for August. Overall, it was the equal hottest August (along with 2015) since records began in 2005, although average day-time temperatures were the highest since records began.     

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 40.8 Celsius (105F) on the 1st, but there were also 3 other days with maxima above 35 Celsius (95F). The 2nd and 3rd had highs of 37.3 Celsius (99F) and 37.9 Celsius (100F) respectively, and the 26th had a top temperature of 36.7 Celsius (98F). On most days (20) the maximum temperature ranged from 28 to 32 Celsius (82-90F). In fact, only 2 days had maxima below 28 Celsius (82F). The 29th had a high of 27.8 Celsius (82F), and 27.1 Celsius (81F) was recorded on the 30th.

As usual, there were many uncomfortably warm nights during August,  although no records were broken. On the 3rd, a low of 27.4 Celsius (81F) occurred, but this was the only night with a minimum temperature above 25 Celsius (77F). However, 9 nights had minima between 24 and 25 Celsius (75-77F) and a further 11 nights had lows between 23 and 24 Celsius (73-75F). Only 2 nights had minimum temperatures below 22 Celsius (72F). A low of 21.7 Celsius (71F) was recorded on the 5th, with 19.4 Celsius (67F) measured on the 29th.  

The sea temperature was 20 Celsius (68F) at the beginning of the month, but it soon rose to 25 Celsius (77F), and after mid month it was 26 or 27 Celsius (80F). It briefly peaked at a tropical 28 Celsius (82F) at the end of the third week. 

Rain

No rain  fell in Malaga during August. 

Thunder

No thunder was heard in Malaga during August. 

Wind

Although southeasterly sea breezes occurred on many afternoons, they were generally lighter and more short-lived than is normal during August. On the hottest days, northwesterly land breezes blew, but overall the northwesterlies were only dominant on around 35% of the days. Gusts only exceeded 20 knots (23 mph) on 3 days. The transition from a land to sea breeze was accompanied by a gust of 24 knots (28 mph) on the11th, but on the 26th a land breeze blew throughout the day with 23 knots (26 mph) recorded. On the following day the northwesterly wind was stronger and more blustery, with a gust of 31 knots (35 mph) measured.

Fog

No fog was observed in this part of Malaga.
