Extremely Dry and Warm
Temperatures
The average maximum temperature during August 2024 in Malaga was 31.4 Celsius (89F), and that was 1.3 Celsius (>2F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 24.5 Celsius (76F), and that was 1.8 Celsius (>3F) above average for August. Overall, it was the warmest August, and the warmest month of any, since records began in 2005.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 41.1 Celsius (106F) on the 2nd, but 38.3 Celsius (101F) occurred on both the 13th and 14th, with 37.2 Celsius (99F) recorded on the 1st. No other days had maxima above 34 Celsius (93F), and only 2 other days had highs above 32 Celsius (90F). All of these hottest days occurred in the first half of August. On all other days, bar 3, the maximum temperature ranged from 29 to 32 Celsius (84-90F). The 3 exceptions were the 5th and 7th, with highs of 28.6 and 28.7 Celsius (83-84F) respectively, and the 23rd when the temperature peaked at a more comfortable 28.1 Celsius (82F). At Malaga Airport there were no maximum temperatures below 30 Celsius (86F).
Many unpleasantly warm and humid nights occurred during August. The highest minimum was 26.7 Celsius (80F) on the 26th, but a low of 26.3 Celsius (79F) occurred on both the 27th and 31st, and a further 8 nights had minima above 25 Celsius (77F). On most other nights the minimum temperature ranged between 23 and 25 Celsius (73-77F). There were 3 exceptions, these all occurring during the first week of August. Minima on the 6th and 7th were 22.6 and 22.5 Celsius (73F) respectively, but the 5th was the least warm night of the month with a low of 21.9 Celsius (72F).
The sea temperature was around 24 or 25 Celsius (75-77F) during the early part of August, but after mid month it was 27 or 28 Celsius (81-82F). It is unusual for high sea temperatures to persist for this long on this part of the Spanish coast, and swimmers remarked that it was like ‘bathing in soup.’
Rain
There was no measurable rain in this part of west Malaga during August, although a few short-lived bursts of rain occurred locally late in the evening on the 28th and in the early hours of the 29th. It was the 9th completely dry August since records began in 2005.
Thunder
High-level cloud to cloud lightning and rumbles of thunder occurred for about 3 hours either side of midnight on the 28th/29th.
Wind
Land breezes from the northwest dominated on the 3 hottest days and, inexplicably, on 1 of the coolest days, the 5th, otherwise the early onset of sea breezes ensured a domination of southeasterly winds. On most days winds were light or gentle, but 4 days had gusts above 20 knots (23 mph). In the early hours of the 3rd, a transition from a hot northwesterly land breeze (the temperature was 34 Celsius (93F) at midnight!) to a much cooler wind off the sea was marked by east-southeasterly gusts peaking at 22 knots (25 mph). The 14th was windy all day with the dry and hot northwesterly wind reaching 30 knots (34 mph). The sea breeze was quite brisk on the 19th and 21 knots (24 mph) was recorded in the afternoon. The thunderstorms on the 28th/29th were accompanied by some sudden downdraughts. The highest gust occurred as the storms were moving away to the north. The highest gust was 22 knots (25 mph) from the east-southeast.
Fog
No fog was observed in this part of Malaga.
