Temperatures
The average maximum temperature during December 2019 in Malaga was 18.8 Celsius (66F), and that was 1.6 Celsius (3F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 11.6 Celsius (53F), and that was 1.4 Celsius (<3F) above normal for December. Overall, it was the mildest December since records began in 2005.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 23.2 Celsius (74F) on the 23rd, but there were 8 other days when the temperature rose above 20 Celsius (68F0, including the 24th with 22.9 Celsius (73f) and the 25th with 22.4 Celsius (72F). On many other days (11) the temperature peaked at between 18 and 20 Celsius (64-68F) but there were several cooler days, and on 6 days maxima were below 16 Celsius (61F). The coolest day was the 31st with a high of 15.1 Celsius (59F), but on the 2nd the maximum was only 15.3 (60F).
There were several mild nights during December, and on 7 nights the temperature stayed above 14 Celsius (57F) including 4 consecutive nights commencing on the 20th. On 3 of these milder nights the temperature remained above 15 Celsius (59F), but just 1, the 21st, had a low exceeding 16 Celsius (61F). The minimum of that night was 16.7 Celsius (62F). There were many rather cool nights, all of which occurred after mid month. In total, there were 10 nights with minima below 10 Celsius (50F), although only 4 nights had lows under 9 Celsius (48F), and only the 31st, with a minimum of 6.9 Celsius (45F) dipped below 8 Celsius (46F).
The sea temperature was 14 Celsius (57F) at first, soon rising to 15 Celsius (59F) where it stayed for the remainder of the month.
Rain
There were 30.2 millimetres (1.2 ins.) of rain during December, and that was only 42% of the monthly average. Only September had above average rainfall during 2019 and the deficit from average for the year was 61%. The 179.9 millimetres (7.1 ins.) recorded, if repeated over a decade, would see Malaga re-classified as a Desert region. Back to December, there were 8 days with measurable rain, which was actually 2 days above normal. Showery outbreaks on the evening of the 1st gave 1 millimetres (0.04 ins.) of rain. The rain continued into the early hours of the 2nd with further rain in the evening. This totalled 4.8 millimetres (0.2 ins.) with rain continuing overnight. This made the 3rd the wettest day of the month with 8.9 millimetres (0.35 ins.). Dry weather prevailed until the 15th but then 5 out of the following 6 days had some rain. Much of the rain was light, but over 8 millimetres (0.3 ins.) fell on the 19th with 4 millimetres (0.15 ins.). The rest of the month was dry, although the last few days of the year were often rather cloudy.
Thunder
There was no thunder heard in West Malaga during December.
Wind
December was another fairly breezy month, especially during the first 2 weeks. West to northwesterly winds dominated, as they usually do in December, but there was a mild levanter (winds from the east) on the 2nd, and easterly breezes occurred through much of the day on the 17th, 19th, 29th and 30th. Gusts exceeded 20 knots (23 mph) on 7 days during December, but the only breezy day after mid month was the 19th with 21 knots (24 mph). There were 4 consecutive windy days, beginning on the 11th, with the highest gust of the month, 28 knots (32 mph), occurring on the 14th.
Fog
There was no fog observed in this part of Malaga during December.
