Weather in Malaga – December 2022

                             Mild and Wet

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during December 2022 in Malaga was 19.3 Celsius (67F), and that was 1.8 Celsius (>3F) above  normal for the time of year. It was the highest average value for day-time temperatures since records began in 2005. The average minimum temperature was 11.9 Celsius (54F), and that was 1.5 Celsius (<3 F) above normal for December. 

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 23.1 Celsius (73F) on the 12th, but 3 other days had maxima above 22 Celsius (72F), including a high of 22.7 Celsius (73F) on the 22nd. A further 8 days had highs above 20 Celsius (68F). Unusually, 9 of the 12 very mild days occurred after mid month, with each of the last 7 days of the year having maxima above 20 Celsius (68F). There were no particularly cool days during December. In fact, only 6 days had maxima below the average of 17.5 Celsius (63F), with the last of these cooler days occurring on the 16th. Just 2 days had maxima below 16 Celsius (61F). They were the 16th, with a high of 15.8 Celsius (60F), and the 1st,  with a top temperature of 14.7 Celsius (59F). 

No exceptionally mild nights occurred during December, but on 4 occasions the temperature stayed above 15 Celsius (59F). All of the mildest nights were between the 8th and 14th, with the highest values occurring on the 13th and 14th, with lows of 17.3 and 15.5 Celsius (63 and 60F) respectively. There were no especially cold nights during December,  although on 5 nights the temperature dipped below 10 Celsius (50F). Only 2 of these colder nights had minima below 9 Celsius (48F). On the 2nd, a low of 8.7 Celsius (48F) occurred, and on the 31st a minimum of 7.9 Celsius (46F) occurred.

The sea temperature stayed around 15 Celsius (59F) throughout the month.

Rain

There were 91.4 millimetres (3.6 ins.) of rain during December. This was 46% above the monthly average. With less than 20 millimetres (0.8 ins.) of rain falling between the beginning of April and the end of November,  this precipitation was much welcomed. Measurable rain  fell on 12 days, which was 6 above normal. Rain fell as the month began, but only 1.8 millimetres (0.07 ins.) were measured on the 1st.  After a  dry day on the 2nd, rain  fell on each of the following 4 days, including 16.8 millimetres (0.66 ins.) on the 5th. The 7th was another dry day, but the 8th had 9.2 millimetres (0.36 ins.), and the 9th had frequent bursts of heavy rain with a total for the day of 40.2 millimetres (1.58 ins.). Although the 10th and 12th were dry, each day between the 13th and 16th had rain, including 12.6 millimetres (0.5 ins.) on the 14th. After the 16th, no further rain fell in this part of Malaga for the rest of the month.  

Thunder

There were 3 days with thunder during December. On the 5th, a rumble of thunder preceded heavy rain in the early part of the evening. The 9th had several claps of thunder around the middle of the day, and on the 14th there was thunder around mid morning and again late in  the evening.

Wind

On most days there were northwesterly land breezes, with afternoon southeasterly sea breezes generally weak and confined to the first half of the month. Some short-lived levanters (strong east to southeasterly winds) occurred on the 5th and 6th,  and again on the 8th. Gusts exceeded 20 knots (23 mph) on 4 days, the highest of which being 41 knots (47 mph) on the 6th. This was the highest gust in December since records began in 2005.  Gusts of 39 knots (45 mph) and 33 knots (38 mph) occurred on the 5th and 8th respectively. A northwesterly gust of 22 knots (25 mph) was recorded on the 21st.

Fog

No fog was observed in this part of Malaga.
