Temperatures
The average maximum temperature during December 2024 in Malaga was 18.4 Celsius (65F), and that was 0.8 Celsius (1.5F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 10.5 Celsius (51F), and that was average for December.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 23.4 Celsius (74F) on the 7th. A high of 23.1 Celsius (73F) occurred on the 3rd, and 22.4 Celsius (72F) was recorded on the 19th. A further 4 days, the 5th, 6th, 8th and 20th, had maxima above 20 Celsius (68F). On most other days (21) the top temperature ranged from 16 to 20 Celsius (61-68F). There were 3 exceptions, with these all occurring during the second week of December. On the 9th, a high of 15.8 Celsius (60F) was recorded, with 14.7 Celsius (59F) occurring on the 11th. However, the coolest day of the month was the 12th, with a high of 13.5 Celsius (56F).
No particularly mild nights occurred during December, but 16.6 Celsius (62F) occurred on the 7th, and 14.8 and 14.7 Celsius (59 and 58F) were measured on the 4th and 27th respectively. A further 11 nights had minima above 10 Celsius (50F), including each of the first 8 nights of December. On the remaining nights, minimum temperatures ranged from 7 to 10 Celsius (45-50F), but there were 2 exceptions. On the 25th, a low of 6.6 Celsius (44F) occurred, but the coolest night of the month was the 11th, with a minimum of 6.3 Celsius (43F).
The sea temperature was around 19 Celsius at the beginning of the month, but fell to 17 Celsius (63F) during the second week, where it remained for the rest of the month.
Rain
There were 42.6 millimetres (1.7 ins.) of rain during December. This was 30% below the long-term average. Measurable rain fell on 4 days, and that was 8 days below average for the time of year. The first 11 days of the month were dry, but showers, these heavy and prolonged in the morning, produced 39.6 millimetres (1.56 ins.) on the 12th. The last of the showers moved away in the early hours of the 13th, but not before adding another 1.2 millimetres (0.05 ins.) of rain to the monthly total. With the ground saturated, it was 0.2 millimetres (0.01 ins.) of dew that ‘tipped’ the rain gauge on the following night. The last rain of the month occurred on the 19th, when showery bursts of rain in the late afternoon and evening totalled 1.6 millimetres (0.06 ins.).
Thunder
Thunder was heard on 2 days during December, making it the first year since records began that thunder was heard in every month. The number of ‘thunder days’ during the year was 21. During December, there was quite frequent thunder and lightning from around dawn until mid afternoon on the 12th. By way of contrast, on the 31st, there was just 1 rumble of thunder from a cumulonimbus cloud that formed inland during the evening but produced no rain.
Hail
No hail was observed in this part of west Malaga.
Wind
December was windier than usual, with northwesterly land breezes accounting for the brisk breezes for most of the month, but with east-southeasterly winds producing the strongest gusts during the last week of December. Gusts exceeded 20 knots (23 mph) on 12 days during the month, with 5 of these days, the 7th, 8th, 16th, 27th and 31st, each having gusts above 25 knots (29 mph). The windiest day was the 16th, when east-southeasterly gusts exceeded 20 knots (23 mph) throughout the day. The highest gust of 30 knots (34 mph) occurred during the morning.
Fog
No fog was observed in this part of west Malaga.
