Wind
February was often windy with a particularly harsh levanter causing much salt damage to coastal shrubs and trees. The unusually prolonged levanter gave gusts of 36 knots (41 mph) on both the 8th and 9th, but it became far worse on the 10th. Gale force 8 winds blew through much of the day, and the gusts of 50 knots (57 mph) that occurred in the evening were the highest for February since records began in 2005. The previous record was 49 knots (56 mph) in 2010. A gust of 47 knots (54 mph) occurred in the early hours of the 11th, with strong to gale force winds persisting through the day. The following 3 days stayed quite windy with gusts frequently exceeding 20 knots (23 mph). However, the levanter weakened, and on the 17th, northwesterly winds dominated. Even so, the east-southeasterlies returned for the 17th and 18th, with a gust of 37 knots (42 mph) recorded on the 17th. Most of the remainder of the month had northwesterly winds, these quite brisk at times, with a gust of 26 knots (30 mph) measured on the 27th.
