Weather in Malaga – January 2023

           Very Dry and Mild, but Windy

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during January 2023 in Malaga was 17.6 Celsius (64F), and that was 0.7 Celsius (1F) above  normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 9.5 Celsius (49F), and that was 0.2 Celsius (<0.5 F) above normal for January.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 21.8 Celsius (71F) on the 9th, but 6 other days had maxima above 20 Celsius (68F), including a high of 21.2 Celsius (70F) on both the 1st and 17th. The coolest weather occurred after mid-month. Before mid-month, each day had maximum temperatures of 17 Celsius (63F) or higher, but after the 15th there were only 4 days when the temperature reached, or exceeded,  17 Celsius (63F). On 7 of these cooler days the temperature stayed below 15 Celsius (59F), but only 3 days had maxima below 14 Celsius (57F). On the 30th a high of 13.7 Celsius (57F) was recorded, but the coolest days of the month were the 24th and 26th with each having a high of 13.5 Celsius (56F).

No exceptionally mild nights occurred during January, but on the 10th a minimum of 14.7 Celsius (59F) occurred, with a low of 14.3 Celsius (58F) on the 9th. The 11th and 17th also had minima above 13 Celsius (55F), with a further 4 nights having minima above 12 Celsius (54F). Overall, there were 17 nights when the temperature fell below 10 Celsius (50F), but only 6 of these cooler nights occurred before mid-month. The lowest temperature before mid-month was 8.2 Celsius (47F) on the 1st, but after mid-month there were 11 nights with minima below 8 Celsius (46F) including each of the last 10 nights of the month. On 4 out of the last 8 nights of the month the temperature dipped below 6 Celsius (43F), but the only night when the temperature fell below 5 Celsius (41F) was on the 29th when 4.6 Celsius (40F) was measured.

The sea temperature stayed around 14 or 15 Celsius (57-59F) throughout the month.

Rain

There were 15.6 millimetres (0.6 ins.) of rain during January. This was only 27% of the monthly average. Rain fell on 4 days, and that was 3 days below normal for the month. A little rain fell on the evening of the 2nd, but it only amounted to 0.2 millimetres (0.01 ins.). Showers fell mid afternoon on the 17th, but the rain was too light to measure. On the 24th, some heavy bursts of rain fell in the early hours with further rain falling in the evening. The total for the day was 12.4 millimetres (0.49 ins.), with the rain lingering after midnight to give another 0.2 millimetres (0.01 ins.). The last rain of the month occurred on the 29th when evening showers gave a total of 2.8 millimetres   (0.11 ins.).

Thunder

There was only 1 day of thunder during January. On the 24th there were storms overnight, with further thunderstorms occurring in the evening.

Wind

January was an unusually windy month, with fresh, occasionally strong, northwesterlies blowing on many days and nights. Afternoon sea breezes from the southeast were infrequent and confined to the first half of the month. Gusts exceeded 20 knots (23 mph) on 14 days and 30 knots (34 mph) was reached on both the 16th and 17th. However, the highest gust occurred on the 24th, when squally easterly winds in association with a thunderstorm produced a gust of 34 knots (39 mph).

Fog

No fog was observed in this part of Malaga.
