Weather in Malaga – January 2024

                   Very Mild and Dry

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during January 2024 in Malaga was 18.2 Celsius (65F), and that was 1.2 Celsius (2 F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 10.8 Celsius (51F), and that was 1.4 Celsius (>2 F) above normal for January. Overall, it was the equal mildest January (along with January 2016) since records began in 2005.

No record-breaking daily temperatures occurred during January in Malaga, but a maximum of 24.1 Celsius (75F) occurred on the 3rd, with highs of 22.9 and 23.3 Celsius (73-74F) on the 2nd and 25th respectively. A further 6 days had maxima above 20 Celsius (68F). On most days (16) the maximum  temperature ranged from 16 to 20 Celsius (61-68F). However, there were 5 days with lower maxima. All of these cooler days occurred during the first fortnight of January. On 4 days the temperature failed to reach 15 Celsius (59F), but only 2 days had maxima below 14 Celsius (57F). On the 6th a high of 13.5 Celsius (56F) was recorded, but the coolest day of the month was the 9th, with a maximum of 13.0 Celsius (55F). In southern Spain, several daily temperature records were broken. New highs for January occurred at Granada, Cordoba, Almeria and Murcia.

There were no particularly mild nights during January, but a minimum of 15.2 Celsius (59F) occurred on the 31st, with 15.0 Celsius (59F) recorded on the previous night. The 1st and 4th had minima of 14.4 and 14.0 Celsius (57-58F) respectively, but on most nights (18) the minimum temperature ranged between 9 and 13 Celsius (48-55F), but there were several cooler nights. On 7 occasions the temperature fell below 9 Celsius (48F). However, only 2 nights had lows under 8 Celsius (46F). On the 7th, a minimum of 7.4 Celsius (45F) occurred, with 7.7 Celsius (46F) recorded on the 14th.

The sea temperature was 15 Celsius (59F) throughout the month.

Rain

A total of 16.8 millimetres (0.66 ins.)  of rain was measured during January. This was 30% of the monthly average. Although this in itself was not a record, the continuing drought has prompted the local authorities to reduce the water pressure in the city, with a hint that rationing may occur if the dry conditions last into the Summer. Measurable rain fell on 7 days during January, which is average for the month. However, the highest daily total was only 4.6 millimetres (0.18 ins.). This occurred on the 4th, and was the first rain of the month. Most of the rain was light, but some heavier bursts occurred in the evening. The rain continued after midnight, but only 0.2 millimetres (0.02 ins.) were added to the total. Outbreaks of rain during the afternoon of the 16th, followed by further rain or showers on the 17th, gave daily totals of 2.6 millimetres (0.1 ins) and 3.0 millimetres (0.12 ins.) respectively. After a dry day on the 18th, showery rain gave 2.8 millimetres (0.11 ins.) on the 19th, and showers on the afternoon and evening of the 20th gave another 1.2 millimetres (0.05 ins.) . This was the last rain to fall during January.

Thunder

Thunderstorms occurred on 3 days during January. On the 4th, there was thunder mid to late evening, mainly over the sea and to the west. On the 9th, there was one rumble of thunder nearby in the middle of the afternoon, and on the 17th there was lightning, and occasional rumbles of thunder,  for over an hour either side of daybreak.

Wind

January was quite breezy during the first fortnight but apart from the 19th and 20th, and the last 2 days of the month, winds were mostly light thereafter. Northwesterly land breezes were dominant and afternoon southeasterly sea breezes were weak or entirely absent. An east-southeasterly ‘levanter’ occurred on the 12th, 20th, 21st, 30th and 31st, but compared to some of the storms that have occurred in previous winter months, they were weak. Gusts exceeded 20 knots (23 mph) on 7 days during January, with the highest gusts of 27 knots (31 mph), 31 knots (35 mph) and 26 knots (30 mph) occurring on the 5th, 12th and 20th respectively.

Fog

No fog was observed in this area during the month.
