Rain
A total of 68.0 millimetres (2.7 ins.) of rain fell during January. This was 32% above the monthly average. Measurable rain fell on 14 days, and that was 7 days above average for the time of year. For the second consecutive month, ‘rain days’ were at a record high. In fact, it was a very unusual month across much of Spain, with a succession of Atlantic weather systems crossing the country, bringing much cloud, wind and plenty of rain, with hill snow. The weather patterns were more reminiscent of northwest Europe. Orographic enhancement of rainfall was very noticeable, and at Grazalema, less than 100 kilometres (62 miles) west of Malaga, a new monthly rainfall record was set. The previous record dated back to 1970, but during January 2026, an incredible 1277 millimetres (50 ins.) of rain were recorded, including 968 millimetres (38 ins.) in just 9 days, commencing on the 21st. The highest daily total was 242 millimetres (9.5 ins.) on the 29th, and a further 5 days had daily totals exceeding 100 millimetres (3.9 ins.). No wonder that Grazalema claims to be the wettest inhabited village in Spain! Back in west Malaga, the month began wet, but a mere 2.8 millimetres (0.11 ins.) of rain were measured. Light rain fell on the 3rd, but rain fell for much of the day on the 4th, and further heavy rain fell during the morning of the 5th. Totals were 15.6 (0.61 ins.) and 13.2 (0.52 ins.) respectively. A light shower occurred on the evening of the 7th, but the following 8 days were dry. After mid-month, it stayed generally unsettled, and 3 consecutive dry days occurred only once (between the 18th and 20th inclusive). Much of the rain was light, but 14.4 millimetres (0.57 ins.) were measured on the 23rd, and 10.6 millimetres (0.42 ins.) occurred on the morning of the 28th. Even when it was not raining, the weather was unusually cloudy for southern Spain, although the last day of the month was an exception. It was dry and sunny.
Thunder
Thunder was heard on 1 day during January. A storm developed inland late in the afternoon on the 5th.
Hail
Several hailstorms were reported across Andalucia during January, and, unusually, there was small hail at this site early in the afternoon on the 5th.
Wind
Winds during January were predominantly from the northwest, but west or southwesterly winds blew at times, especially during the last week of the month, and both the 1st and 4th had east to southeasterly winds dominant. There were 15 days when gusts of 20 knots (23 mph) or more occurred, of which 7 of these gusty days occurred during the first 10 days of the month. On the 4th, the east-southeasterly wind was strong all day, and the peak gust of 42 knots (48 mph) was just short of gale force. The end of the month was also windy, with 4 out of the last 5 days having gusts above 20 knots (23 mph).
Fog
No fog was observed in this part of west Malaga.
