Temperatures
The average maximum temperature during July 2021 in Malaga was 30.4 Celsius (86F), and that was 1.0 Celsius (<2 F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 21.6 Celsius (71F), and that was 0.2 Celsius (0.5 F) below normal for July. Overall, it was the warmest July for 6 years.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 39.9 Celsius (104F) on the 24th, but on the same day, a maximum of 42.6 Celsius (109F) was recorded at Malaga Airport. There were 4 other hot days with temperatures above 35 Celsius (95F), including maxima of 38.8 Celsius (102F) on the 4th and 39.1 Celsius (102F) on the 12th. At Malaga Airport, both of these days had maxima exceeding 40 Celsius (104F). On 7 other days the temperature rose above 30 Celsius (86F). On many days (15) maxima were between 25 and 30 Celsius (77-86F), but 4 cooler days occurred. On the 11th, 20th and 30th maxima were between 24 and 25 Celsius (75-77F), but the 2nd was the coolest day of the month with a high of only 23.2 Celsius (74F).
There were 3 notably warm nights during July. They were the 4th, with a low of 26.7 Celsius (80F), the 6th, when the temperature fell to 26.5 Celsius (80F), and the 25th, with a minimum of 25.7 Celsius (79F). On 2 other nights, the temperature fell to between 23 and 24 Celsius (73-75F), but on all other nights, bar 4, the minimum was between 20 and 23 Celsius (68-73F). The exceptions were the 2nd, 8th, 21st and 26th when temperatures dipped just below 20 Celsius (68F). Early on the morning of the 2nd a low of 19.7 Celsius (68F) was recorded, but the lowest temperature during the whole month occurred at 1215 in the afternoon of the 8th when 19.2 Celsius (67F) was measured.
The sea temperature fluctuated markedly during July, but on a majority of days it was between 19 and 21 Celsius (66-70F).
Rain
As usual, no rain fell during July, but thick sea fog on the morning of the 2nd deposited enough moisture to add 0.3 millimetres (0.01 ins.) of ‘rain’ to the annual total.
Thunder
There was no thunder heard in this part of Malaga.
Wind
It was a typical mid-summer month of gentle morning land breezes replaced until evening by light sea breezes. On some days, there were significant gusts as the northwesterly land breeze was pushed aside by the southeasterly sea breezes, and on the hottest days the sea breeze was very weak or non-existent. Gusts exceeded 20 knots (23 mph) on 5 days, with the highest gust of 28 knots (32 mph) occurring on 2 days, the 19th and 26th.
Fog
Low cloud and sea mist occurred on 6 mornings, with sea fog reported on 4 occasions. The 2nd, 11th, 20th and 30th were the mornings with sea fog occurring, with fog persisting for much of the day on the 30th.
