Temperatures
The average maximum temperature during July 2022 in Malaga was 29.5 Celsius (85F), and that was normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 22.3 Celsius (72F), and that was 0.5 Celsius (<1 F) above normal for July.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 40.5 Celsius (105F) on the 26th. This was the highest July temperature for 17 years, and the second highest since records began in 2005. It fell short of the record by a mere 0.1 Celsius (<0.2F). Moreover, this July day was uniquely hot, as the next highest maximum 32.4 Celsius (90F),which was recorded on both the 15th and 16th. A further 12 days had maxima above 30 Celsius (86F), including 5 consecutive days, commencing on the 14th, and also the last 2 days of the month. The coolest days occurred at the beginning of the month. On 7 of the first 8 days of July the temperature failed to rise above 28 Celsius (82F), but all maxima were above 28 Celsius (82F) on subsequent days. On 3 days, the temperature stayed below 25 Celsius (77F). A high of 24.6 Celsius (76F) on the 5th, was preceded by maxima of 24.3 Celsius (76F) on both the 1st and 3rd.
There were many uncomfortably warm nights in July, especially during the second half of the month. A minimum of 26.3 Celsius (80F) was recorded on the last night of the month, and 25.0 Celsius (77F) occurred on the 26th. A further 7 nights had minima above 23 Celsius (73F), with all of these warmer nights occurring after mid-month. On most days (18) the minimum temperature was between 20 and 23 Celsius (68-73F), but a few cooler nights occurred, mainly early in the month. In fact, the only 4 nights with minima below 20 Celsius (68F) were before the 6th. Just 1 of these nights had a minimum below 19.7 Celsius (68F), and that was the first night of the month, when 17.9 Celsius (64F) was recorded.
The sea temperature, around 20 or 21 Celsius (68-70F) at the beginning of July, gradually rose to 24 or 25 Celsius (75-77F) by mid-month, where it remained for the rest of July.
Rain
There were 0.8 millimetres (0.01 ins.) of rain during July. Although this was a trivial amount, it was enough to make it the wettest July since records began in 2005. The rain occurred in a heavy shower that lasted for less than 10 minutes in the early hours of the 3rd. The only other occasion that measurable rain fell in July was in 2010, also on the 3rd, when 0.3 millimetres (0.01 ins.) were recorded.
Thunder
Thunder was heard once during July. It was associated with the showery interlude overnight on the 3rd, but from a different shower cell to the one that produced the rain.
Wind
The usual combination of northwesterly land breezes and southeasterly sea breezes occurred on most days, although after the first week, winds were light, especially at night, when the land breeze was almost non-existent. The only exception to these conditions was on the 26th, when west to northwesterly winds blew throughout the day. That day was quite breezy too, and recorded the highest gust of the month, but it was only 19 knots (22 mph).
Fog
Sea fog occurred on the morning of the 27th, and sea mist flirted with the coast in the afternoon of the hot day, the 26th. Misty low cloud was also observed at times on the 1st, 20th, 21st and 25th.
