Rare mid-Summer Storms
Temperatures
The average maximum temperature during July 2024 in Malaga was 29.9 Celsius (86F), and that was 0.3 Celsius (0.5F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 21.9 Celsius (72F), and that was average for July.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 38.1 Celsius (101F) on the 21st, but 37.3 Celsius (99F) occurred on the 12th, and 36.6 Celsius (98F) was recorded on the 15th with 36 Celsius (97F) measured on the 1st. Only 7 other days had highs above 30 Celsius (86F), but 2 of those, the 16th and 20th, had maxima above 34 Celsius (93F). On all remaining days the maximum temperature ranged from 25 to 30 Celsius (77-86F). On 7 of these days, all occurring before mid-month, the temperature failed to reach 26 Celsius (79F). On both the 9th and 10th, maxima were 25.2 Celsius (77F), and on the 14th a high of 25.3 Celsius (78F) was recorded.
Several warm nights occurred during the second half of July. On the 21st, the temperature only fell to 27.7 Celsius (82F). That was the highest July minimum since records began in 2005, beating the previous record, set in July 2008, by 0.1 Celsius (<0.2F). It also equalled the annual record set in August of the same year. There were 7 nights with minima above 23 Celsius (73F), with all of these warmer nights occurring after mid month, and included the last 5 nights of July. The highest values were 24.8 Celsius (77F) on the 29th, and 24.6 Celsius (76F) and 24.7 Celsius (76F) on the 30th and 31st respectively. A number of rather cool nights occurred early in the month. On 7 nights, all of these before the 11th, the temperature fell below 20 Celsius (68F). The coolest nights were the 1st and 10th, with both having a minimum of 19.4 Celsius (67F).
The sea temperature, around 18 or 19 Celsius (64-66F) until the beginning of the second week, rose steadily thereafter, with values around 24 or 25 Celsius (75-77F) during the last week of July.
Rain
There were 0.4 millimetres (0.02ins.) of rain during July. This was 4 times the monthly average. Measurable rain fell on 1 day, and that was average for the month. It was the second wettest July since records began in 2005. Only the July of 2022 was wetter, with 0.8 millimetres (0.03 ins.) measured in that year. In most years July is a completely dry month, and any measured precipitation is caused by sea mist. A few spots of drizzle occurred on the morning of the 22nd, but it was not enough to measure. The measurable rain occurred in the hours either side of dawn on the 29th, when fairly high-level cloud, originating from Morocco finally produced some rain after giving a mostly cloudy day on the 28th. Very short-lived heavy bursts produced 0.4 millimetres (0.02 ins.) of dust-laden rain. It was not popular. It covered cars, scooters and terraces with dirt, and gave little relief to the suffering flora.
Thunder
Thunder was heard on and off for about 2 hours either side of dawn on the 29th. Lightning, most of which was from cloud to cloud, was quite frequent. Thunderstorms in July are rare, especially those that rumble on for nearly 2 hours. In the last 20 years, only 5 other thunderstorms have occurred, and 2 of these have not produced any rainfall in this part of west Malaga.
Wind
The wind directions during July were mostly typical of a mid-Summer month. Northwesterly land breezes from late evening until late on the following morning, followed by southeasterly sea breezes until evening. There were a few afternoons when fresh south to southwest winds blew, but these winds only extended a short distance inland and occurred early in the month when there was a large difference between land and sea temperatures. Only 3 days had gusts above 20 knots (23 mph). On the 1st, a blustery warm land breeze persisted through the day with a peak gust of 29 knots (33 mph). A similar gust occurred overnight on the 22nd, when the hot land breeze from the previous day was abruptly replaced by a much cooler east-southeasterly wind. It was accompanied by a fall in air temperature of 9 degrees Celsius (16F) in less than half an hour. The final high gust of the month occurred on the 29th, when a thundery downdraught produced an isolated gust of 24 knots (27 mph).
Fog
No fog was observed in this part of Malaga, although sea mist occurred for a while on the afternoon of the 2nd with the visibility just above the fog limit of 1000 metres.
