Temperatures
The average maximum temperature during June 2023 in Malaga was 27.2 Celsius (81F), and that was 0.1 Celsius (<0.2 F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 20.3 Celsius (69F), and that was 1.0 Celsius (<2 F) above normal for June.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 32.6 Celsius (91F) on the 27th, but there were 6 other days with maxima above 30 Celsius (86F). The warmest of these days was the 13th with a high of 30.9 Celsius (88F). Interestingly, at the time of writing, the highest temperature of the year so far was on the 29th April when 33.0 Celsius (91F) was recorded. On most June days (17) the maximum temperature was between 25 and 30 Celsius (77-86F), but there were several less warm days. On 6 days the temperature failed to reach 25 Celsius (77F), but the 19th, with a maximum of 23.1 Celsius (74F), was the only cool day after the 8th. The coolest day was the 8th with a high of 22.7 Celsius (73F).
No exceptionally warm nights occurred in June, but a low of 23.2 Celsius (74F) occurred on the 28th, and 5 other nights during the last week of the month had minima of 22.0 Celsius (72F). A further 11 days had lows between 20 and 22 Celsius (68-72F). No particularly cool nights occurred during June, and although 13 nights had minima under 20 Celsius (68F), only 2 nights had lows under 18 Celsius (64F). The temperature on the 4th fell to 17.9 Celsius (64F), but the first night of the month was the coolest with a minimum of 17.4 Celsius (63F).
The sea temperature was around 17 Celsius (63F) at first, but for most of the month it was closer to 19 or 20 Celsius (66-68F). However, the last few days of the month were warmer, with 23 Celsius (73F) measured on the 30th.
Rain
A total of 8.2 millimetres (0.32 ins.) of rain fell in June, and although this is a meagre total, it was over four and a half times the monthly average and it made June 2023 the wettest for 11 years. Rain fell on 5 days, and that was the highest number of June ‘rain days’ since records began in 2005. The first rain of the month fell on the 2nd, when showers in the early hours produced 1.6 millimetres (0.06 ins.). Occasional rain fell until early afternoon on the 7th and the total of 2.8 millimetres (0.11 ins.) made it the wettest day of the month. Showers on the following afternoon added another 2.0 millimetres (0.08 ins.), but it was then dry until the 18th. Showery rain, especially in the afternoon and evening, produced 1.6 millimetres (0.06 ins.) on the 18th, with a shower late in the morning on the 21st adding 0.2 millimetres (0.01 ins.) to the total. The remainder of the month was dry and unusually, there were 8 consecutive completely cloudless days commencing on the 22nd.
Thunder
Thunder was heard in Malaga on 4 separate days during June. This was a new record for the month. Thunder and lightning occurred briefly in the early hours of the 2nd, but thunder on the 18th lasted for a couple of hours late in the afternoon and early in the evening. An overnight storm on the 20th lasted for around an hour, with lightning and 1 rumble of thunder inland in the middle of the night on the 21st.
Wind
As is common at this time of year, the sea breeze from the southeast, and the land breeze from the northwest, compete for dominance. In June, southeasterly winds were dominant on 15 days, with northwesterlies dominating on 13 days. On most days and nights the winds were quite light. In fact, although there were occasional moderate afternoon sea breezes, the only day with a significant wind was the 30th. It was the only day with gusts above 20 knots (23 mph). The east-southeasterly wind increased suddenly early in the afternoon and peaked at 24 knots (27 mph) mid afternoon.
Fog
No fog was observed in this part of Malaga.
