Temperatures
The average maximum temperature during March 2023 in Malaga was 22.4 Celsius (72F), and that was 3.3 Celsius (6F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 12.1 Celsius (54F), and that was 0.7 Celsius (>1 F) above normal for March. Overall, it was the warmest March since records began in 2005, with the average maximum temperature exceeding the previous record (set in 2008) by a massive 1.9 Celsius (3.5F).
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 29.7 Celsius (86F) on the 31st, but although this failed to beat the record of 30.4 Celsius (87F) set in 2015, there were a further 3 days with maxima above 28 Celsius (82F), these all occurring during the last week of the month. On 4 more days, all of these during the second week of March, the temperature exceeded 25 Celsius (77F). In a month notable for its warmth, there were 7 days with below average temperatures. On the 21st a high of 18.6 Celsius (65F) occurred, but the other cooler days were confined to the first 6 days of the month. Only 2 of these days had highs below 17 Celsius (63F). They were the 5th, with a maximum of 16.1 Celsius (61F), and the 4th, the coolest day of the month, with a high of 15.8 Celsius (60F).
The minimum temperature on the last day of March was 19.8 Celsius (68F). Not only was this a new record for the month, surpassing the previous record set in 2007 by 1.5 Celsius (3.5F), but it also bettered the April record of 19.4 Celsius (67F). On 6 other nights the temperature remained above 15 Celsius (59F), including 4 consecutive nights commencing on the 9th. The only one of these warmer nights to exceed 16 Celsius (61F) was the 11th, when 17.3 Celsius (63F) was recorded. On most nights the minimum temperature was between 10 and 15 Celsius (50-59F), but there were several cooler nights. On 7 occasions the temperature fell below 10 Celsius (50F), but only 2 of these colder nights occurred after the 5th. However, the minimum temperatures on the 16th and 22nd were less than 1 Celsius (1.8F) below 10 Celsius (50F). The first 3 nights of the month were the coldest with lows of 6.2 Celsius (43F), 5.9 Celsius (43F) and 5.7 Celsius (42F) respectively.
The sea temperature was around 15 or 16 Celsius (59-61F) for most of the month, but rose to 17 Celsius (63F) during the last week of March.
Rain
There were 4.6 millimetres (0.18 ins.) of rain during March. This was only 7% of the monthly average. It was the second driest March since records began (2005), behind the 4.3 millimetres (0.17 ins.) that fell in March 2007. Measurable rain fell on just 2 days, and that was 6 days below the average. Rain fell on the evening of the 5th, but there was too little to measure. However, the rain was heavier on the following evening with 4.0 millimetres (0.16 ins.) recorded. The rain persisted into the early hours of the 7th, adding another 0.6 millimetres (0.02 ins.) to the monthly total. However, that proved to be the last rain that fell during March.
Thunder
There was no thunder heard in this part of west Malaga during March.
Wind
South to southeasterly winds blew for much of the day on both the 15th and 20th, otherwise northwesterly land breezes dominated with only a few afternoon southeasterly sea breezes developing. On a couple of days, the unpleasant sand-lifting afternoon southwesterly winds blew, but generally the breezes through the month were not particularly strong. However, on 6 days gusts exceeded 20 knots (23 mph), with 4 of these windier days occurring between the 10th and 14th. The highest gust was 27 knots (31 mph) on the 14th.
Fog
No fog was observed in this part of Malaga during the mornings, but sea mist occurred late afternoon and during the evening on the 25th.
