Temperatures
The average maximum temperature during March 2024 in Malaga was 19.3 Celsius (67F), and that was 0.1 Celsius (<0.2 F) above normal for the time of year. Unusually, this was lower than the average maximum during February (19.5 C.). The average minimum temperature was 12.2 Celsius (54F), and that was 0.7 Celsius (1 F) above normal for March. Average minimum temperatures were the second highest in March (behind 2020) since records began in 2005.
The highest temperature recorded during March was 24.6 Celsius (76F) on the 15th, but highs of 23.8 Celsius (75F) and 23.7 Celsius (75F) occurred on the 18th and 23rd respectively, and a further 9 days had maxima above 20 Celsius (68F). A total of 9 consecutive days, commencing on the 15th, had maxima above 20 Celsius (68F). On many days (15) maxima ranged from 16 to 20 Celsius (61-68F), but on 4 occasions the temperature failed to reach 16 Celsius (61F). Both the 7th and 31st had maxima below 16 Celsius (61F), but only the 9th and 30th had highs under 15 Celsius (59F). On these days, the temperature peaked at 14.7 Celsius (58F) and 14.1 Celsius (57F) respectively.
There were no exceptionally mild nights, but on 6 occasions minima stayed above 15 celsius (59F), including 4 consecutive nights beginning on the 21st. Lows of 15.7 Celsius (60F) were recorded on both the 23rd and 24th, but the mildest night of the month was the 22nd with a minimum of 16.5 Celsius (62F). On most nights, the range of minima was from 10 to 15 Celsius (50-59F), but 7 nights had minima below 10 Celsius (50F). The 10th, 26th and 31st each had lows between 9 and 10 Celsius (48-50F), but 6th, 8th and 13th had minimum temperatures under 9 Celsius (48F). The lowest reading was 8.2 Celsius (47F) on the 6th.
The sea temperature was 14 Celsius (57F) at first, before slowly rising to 16 Celsius (61F) during the last week of March, although it fell to 15 celsius (59F) on the last 2 days of the month.
Rain
A total of 107.6 millimetres (4.2 ins.) of rain was measured during March. This was 75% above the monthly average. Measurable rain fell on 15 days, which is 7 days above average for the month. The month began with unsettled weather, although rainfall was light, and the rain that fell on both the 2nd and 3rd amounted to less than 1 millimetre (0.04 ins). After 3 dry days, there was some heavy rain during the afternoon and evening of the 7th with 9.8 millimetres (0.4 ins.) measured. Rain continued into the early hours of the 8th, with further rain during the evening. Although rain was light on the 8th, it became heavy at times overnight, and 22.0 millimetres (0.86 ins.) had fallen by the time it petered out on the morning of the 9th. Light showers occurred on both the 10th and 11th for a combined total of less than 1 millimetre (0.04 ins.), before 9 dry days occurred. Thundery showers overnight on the 21st gave 1.4 millimetres (0.05 ins.) of rain, but after 2 dry days, there was a very changeable end to month. The 27th was dry, but rain fell on every other day after the 23rd. On the 24th, 7.2 millimetres (0.3 ins.) of rain were recorded, with rain then mostly light until the last 2 days of March. Rain fell for most of the day on the 30th with 34.0 millimetres (1.34 ins.) measured. Almost a repeat performance on the last day of the month yielded another 19.6 millimetres (0.77 ins.) of rain.
Thunder
Thunderstorms occurred on 2 days during March. The first was overnight on the 21st and lasted for almost an hour. The second consisted of just 1 rumble of thunder early in the evening of the 24th.
Wind
Although northwesterly land breezes accounted for around two thirds of the daily observations, the cyclonic nature of the month part allowed a significant portion of winds from other directions, but mainly from east-southeast. Apart from on the 6th and 7th, the remaining 8 days with winds from a southeasterly quadrant occurred after the 18th. The strongest winds generally blew from the east-southeast , although gusts over 20 knots (23 mph) were equally divided between east-southeasterlies and northwesterlies. The highest gusts were 29 knots (33 mph) from the northwest on the 3rd and 26 knots (30 mph) from the east-southeast on the 24th.
Fog
Sea fog occurred on the afternoon of the 16th, and Saharan sand in suspension reduced visibility, and created an orange day-time hue for several days at the end of the third week and the beginning of the fourth week.
