
Extremely, Wet, Thundery and Windy
Temperatures
The average maximum temperature during March 2025 in Malaga was 19.0 Celsius (66F), and that was 0.2 Celsius (<0.5F) below normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 12.4 Celsius (54F), and that was 0.9 Celsius (<2F) above average for March.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 28.0 Celsius (82F) on the 29th, but no other days had maxima above 25 Celsius (77F). The next warmest days were the 28th and 27th with highs of 25.0 and 24.2 Celsius (77 and 76F) respectively. A further 4 days had highs above 20 Celsius (68F), but the highest temperature on these warmer days was only 21.3 Celsius (70F) on the 26th. All of the warmer days occurred after the 25th with 1 exception. On the 11th, a maximum temperature of 20.5 Celsius (69F) occurred. On most other days the temperature ranged from 16 to 20 Celsius (61-68F), but there were 4 exceptions. Both the 8th and 17th had maxima a shade under 16 Celsius (61F), but the coolest days of the month were the 9th and 23rd, with highs of 14.3 and 14.6 Celsius (58F) respectively.
There were no notably mild nights during March, but a low of 15.6 Celsius (60F) occurred on the 3rd, and 15.4 Celsius (60F) was recorded on both the 20th and 30th. A further 5 nights had minima above 14.0 Celsius (57F). On most other nights the minimum temperature ranged from 10 to 14 Celsius (50-57F). However, there were 5 cooler nights. The 9th, 10th, 15th, 24th and 31st each had minimum temperatures between 9 and 10 Celsius (48-50F). The coolest night was the 24th with a low of 9.1 Celsius (48F) opccurred, closely followed by the 9th when a minimum of 9.2 Celsius (48F) was recorded.
The sea temperature was around 15 or 16 Celsius (59-61F) through most of the month, but dipped to 14 Celsius (57F) for a while at the end of the third week.
Rain
There were 197.8 millimetres (7.8 ins.) of rain during March. This was 3.1 times the average, and it was the wettest March since records began in 2005. Much of southern Spain had between 200 and 400 millimetres of rain (8-16 ins.) of rain during the month, and at Grazalema, known as the wettest populated place in Spain, a massive 759 millimetres (29.9 ins.) of rain fell, an amount that exceeded the average annual rainfall in most European capitals. Measurable rain fell in west Malaga on 20 days, and that was 12 days above average for the time of year. Not only was this the highest number of rain days in March, it was also the highest of any month since records began in 2005. It was raining as the month began, although only 2.2 millimetres (0.09 ins.) were measured during the day. The 2nd was wetter, with 9.8 millimetres (0.39 ins.), but the 3rd was dry. However, the next dry day was the 15th. In between, there was plenty of heavy rain. On the 8th, a total of 55.2 millimetres (2.2 ins.) was measured. This was only 0.4 millimetres (0.02 ins.) short of the March record that occurred in 2018. The 72-hour period beginning at midnight on the 8th produced 107 millimetres (4.2 ins.) of rain, with totals of 31.0 (1.2 ins.) and 20.8 millimetres (0.82 ins.) on the 9th and 10th respectively. A total of 23.8 millimetres (0.94 ins.) was measured on the 13th, another 10 millimetres (0.39 ins.) on the 17th, followed by 23.6 millimetres (0.93 ins.) on the 18th. Thereafter, it was considerably drier through the remainder of the month with only 7.2 millimetres (0.28 ins.) of rain falling. The wettest day was the 20th with 4.0 millimetres (0.16 ins.). In fact, the last 6 days of the month were dry and mostly sunny.
Thunder
There were 8 days when thunder was heard during March. This was a new high for any month since records began in 2005. The first thunderstorm of the month occurred early in the evening of the 8th and lasted about half an hour A thunderstorm spanned midnight on the 9th/10th, and lightning and thunder lasted almost an hour during the early hours of the 13th. One clap of thunder occurred on the evening of the 17th, followed by an hour of thunderstorms during the early hours of the 18th. A solitary clap of thunder occurred on the evening of the 20th, and again mid-afternoon on the 25th.
Hail
No hail was observed in this part of west Malaga, but the cumulonimbus cloud that produced the heavy hailstorm northwest of Malaga on the 25th, fringed this site as it decayed, producing 1 rumble of thunder and a mere 0.4 millimetres (0.02 ins.) of rain.
Wind
March was a very unsettled month and it was unusually windy at times. There were several levanters (strong winds from the east-southeast), and squally gusts in association with some of the thundery downpours. Gusts exceeded 20 knots (23 mph), a new record for any month, and on 4 days there were gusts of 30 knots (34 mph), or more. On the 10th, the gust of 30 knots (34 mph) was from the northwest, but the 3 days with higher gusts experienced winds from an east-southeasterly direction. On the 16th, a gust of 36 knots (41 mph) was recorded, with 37 knots (42 mph) on the 8th. However, the windiest day was the 18th when several gusts exceeded 40 knots (46 mph). The peak gust was 49 knots (56 mph) on the 18th, which was a new record for March, beating the previous record of 45 knots (51 mph) that occurred in 2010.
Fog
No fog was observed in this part of west Malaga, although the heavy rain, particularly on the 8th and 18th, reduced visibility below 1000 metres (fog limits) at times.
