Extremely Dry and Rather Warm
Temperatures
The average maximum temperature during May 2019 in Malaga was 24.3 Celsius (76F), and that was 0.4 Celsius (<1F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 16.9 Celsius (63F), and that was 0.8 Celsius (1F) above normal for May.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 28.9 Celsius (84F) on the 8th, but both the 5th and 9th also had maximum temperatures above 28 Celsius (82F). There were a further 10 days with maxima exceeding 25 Celsius (77F), with 7 of these warmer days occurring after mid month. There were no particularly cool days during May, but on 6 occasions the temperature failed to reach 22 Celsius (72F). The last of these cooler days occurred on the 30th, but 4 of them occurred during the first week of May, including the 3rd and 4th when highs of 20.9 Celsius made these 2 days the coolest of the month.
There were several fairly warm nights during May, and on 4 nights the temperature remained above 19 Celsius (66F). Only 1 of these warmer nights occurred after mid month, with the warmest night occurring on the 11th when a low of 19.5 Celsius (67F) was recorded. There were 5 nights with minima between 18 and 19 Celsius (64-66F), and a further 5 nights having minima above 17 Celsius (63F). There were no especially cool nights during May. In fact, only 5 nights had minimum temperatures below 15 Celsius (59F). The lowest temperatures occurred on the 2nd, 3rd, 14th, 15th and 31st, with the lowest temperature of 13.4 Celsius (56F) occurring on the 15th.
The sea temperature steadily rose from 17 Celsius (63F) at the beginning of the month to 20 Celsius (68F) at the end of May.
Rain
There was not a hint of rain in West Malaga during May. It was the first completely dry May since records began in 2005. So far this year less than 69 millimetres (2.7 ins.) of rain have fallen, a deficit of over 75%.
Thunder
There was no thunder heard in west Malaga during May.
Wind
Although the northwesterly land breeze occurred on most nights and early mornings, the southeasterly sea breeze developed regularly from late morning , and continued until evening. There were few exceptions. Winds were mainly gentle or moderate, but on 4 occasions gusts exceeded 20 knots (23 mph), including 29 knots (33 mph) on the 17th.
Fog
No fog was observed in west Malaga during May.
