Weather in Malaga – May 2022

Very Dry and Warm

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during May 2022 in Malaga was 25.5 Celsius (78F), and that was 1.6 Celsius (>2F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 16.9 Celsius (62F), and that was 0.7 Celsius (1 F) above normal for May. Overall, it was the warmest May in west Malaga since records began in 2005.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 34.3 Celsius (94F) on the 23rd. This was a new May record for this site. At Malaga Airport the temperature rose to 34.8 Celsius (95F), with 35.3 Celsius (95F) recorded along the coast at Estepona. There were 3 other days with maxima above 30 Celsius (86F). They were the 22nd, 24th and 30th, with highs of 31.2 Celsius (88F), 31.8 Celsius (89F) and 30.3 Celsius (86F) respectively. On 11 further occasions the temperature rose above 25 Celsius (77F), with all bar 1 of these warmer days occurring after mid-month. The exception was on the 2nd when a maximum of 27.1 Celsius (81F) was measured. The coolest days occurred early in May. The only day after mid month with a maximum below 24 Celsius (75F) was the 26th when 22.2 Celsius (72F) occurred. Before mid-month there were 7 days with maxima below 24 Celsius (75F), including 3 days when the temperature failed to reach 21 Celsius (70F). These cooler days were the 3rd, 4th and 5th, with highs of 20.1 Celsius (68F), 19.1 Celsius (66F) and 19.7 Celsius (67F) respectively.

There were 2 exceptionally warm nights during May. On the 23rd, the temperature fell to 21.5 Celsius (70F), a new May record (2005), but on the following night it was even warmer with a low of 23.0 Celsius (73F). There were 9 other nights with minima above 18 Celsius (64F), and all of these warmer nights occurred after mid month. No especially cool nights occurred in May, but the early part of the month was the coolest. The temperature fell to 15.5 Celsius (60F) on the 27th, but the other 11 nights with minima below 16 Celsius (61F) all occurred before the 13th. This included 7 nights with lows under 15 Celsius (59F), and 2 of which had minima under 14 Celsius (57F). The coolest night was the 6th with a minimum temperature of 13.4 Celsius (56F).

The sea temperature was around 17 Celsius (63F) early in May but rose to between 18 and 20 Celsius (64-68F) after mid month. However, the temperature dipped to 17 Celsius (63F) on the last day of May. 

Rain

There were 7.8 millimetres (0.3 ins.) of rain during May. That was only 35% of the monthly average. Measurable rain fell on just 2 days, which was 2 days below the average. Rain fell early on the 3rd and amounted to 0.6 millimetres (0.02 ins.). On the following day, a combination of overnight rain, and showers in the afternoon and early evening, produced a total of 7.2 millimetres (0.3 ins.). The remainder of the month was completely dry.  

Thunder

No thunder was heard during the month in west Malaga.

Wind

The usual combination of northwesterly land breezes and southeasterly sea breezes occurred on many days, although the unpleasant southwesterly wind that sometimes occurs in spring and often raises sand on the beach, occurred on 7 afternoons. The most persistent, and often strongest, northwesterly winds were associated with the highest temperatures, whereas, the early onset of sea breezes produced the coolest days. Generally, though, winds were light and gusts above 20 knots (23 mph) only occurred on 3 days. Southwesterly gusts reached 21 knots (24 mph) on the 2nd, and northwesterly gusts of 22 and 21 knots (25 and 24 mph) were recorded on the 23rd and 24th respectively.  

Fog

No fog was observed in this part of Malaga.
