Warm, but a notable Wet interlude
Temperatures
The average maximum temperature during November 2024 in Malaga was 21.6 Celsius (72F), and that was 1.7 Celsius (3F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 15.5 Celsius (60F), and that was 2.6 Celsius (4.5F) above average for November. Overall, it was the warmest November since records began in 2005.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 25.7 Celsius (78F) on the 9th. Maxima above 24 Celsius (75F) occurred on 3 other days, the 3rd, 4th and 10th. On most days (19) the highest temperature ranged from 20 to 23 Celsius (68-73F), but on 6 days the temperature failed to reach 20 Celsius (68F). The last 10 days of November contained 5 of these cooler days, but only the 21st, with a high of 18.7 Celsius (66F), remained below 19 Celsius (66F). The coolest day of the month was the 13th with a maximum of 18.3 Celsius (65F).
Although no exceptional warmth occurred during November, nights were consistently mild. The mildest night was the 7th, with a low of 18.2 Celsius (65F), but on 4 nights, these all before the 11th, the minimum temperature was between 17 and 18 Celsius (63-64F). On most other nights (21) the lowest temperature ranged from 14 to 17 Celsius (57-63F). There were only 4 exceptions. The 23rd had a low of 13.7 Celsius (57F), and both the 24th and 29th had lows of 13.1 Celsius (55F). The lowest temperature of the month was 12.9 Celsius (55F). This occurred on the 13th, but not at night; it was recorded at ten past two in the afternoon. In records going back to 2005, each November had at least 1 night with temperatures dipping to 10 Celsius (50F) or lower.
The sea temperature was 19 or 20 Celsius (66-68F) throughout the month. These values were higher than those recorded during the last 3 weeks of October.
Rain
There were 66.8 millimetres (2.6 ins.) of rain during November. This was 2% below the long-term average. Measurable rain fell on 3 days, and that was 4 days below average for the time of year. The first 6 days of the month were dry, but a heavy shower in the early hours of the 7th gave 1.6 millimetres (0.06 ins.) of rain. A further 5 days of dry weather were followed by a short spell of intense rainfall on the 13th. A combination of higher sea temperatures than normal, uplift of moist southerly winds over the mountains, and saturated ground after the heavy rain of late October, produced ideal conditions for devastating floods. Fortunately, AEMET (the Spanish Weather Service) performed admirably and issued a ‘Red Alert’ for heavy rain well in advance of the event, with most of the folk of Malaga Province staying at home. The rainfall total for the day at this site in west Malaga was a fairly modest 49.4 millimetres (1.94 ins.), mainly comprising the 28 millimetres (1.1 ins.) that fell between 1140 and 1340 local time, and the 20 millimetres (0.79 ins.) that were measured between 1430 and 1550. The highest rainfall totals appear to have been over, and to the north of, Malaga. At Malaga Met. Office in the El Consul district of Malaga, roughly 5 km ( 3 mi.) north of this site, a total of 141 millimetres (5.6 ins.) of rain was recorded between 0700 and 1900 local time, including 76 millimetres (3 ins.) between 1200 and 1300, and another 48 millimetres (1.9 ins.) between 1300 and 1500. The weather station at Malaga Harbour, about 5 km to the northeast, recorded 114 millimetres (4.5 ins.) in the 12 hour period, with 67 millimetres (2.6 ins.) falling between 1300 and 1400. At Malaga Airport, a mere 4 km to the west, 64 millimetres (2.5 ins.) of rain fell in the 12 hour period, with no remarkable hourly totals. To the southwest, Fuengirola and Estepona had 36 millimetres (1.4 ins.) and 32 millimetres (1.26 ins.) respectively, and to the east, at Adra, between Motril and Almeria, it stayed completely dry. Although the worst of the rain cleared away to the north during the afternoon of the 13th, a further area of heavy rain occurred in the early hours of the 14th. A total of 15.8 millimetres was recorded, but this was the last measurable rain to fall during November, although a very light shower occurred on the evening of the 19th.
Thunder
Thunder was heard on only 1 day during November, and that was on the 13th. Occasional thunder occurred between late morning and late afternoon.
Hail
Small hail was observed to fall for a short time early and mid afternoon on the 13th.
Wind
The usual late autumn transition from dominant sea breezes to dominant land breezes continued during November, with predominantly NW land breezes occurring on 19 days. The northwesterlies were mostly fairly light, but they were brisk for a while around the end of the third week, with a gust of 23 knots (26 mph) recorded on the 21st. Rapid pressure fluctuations occurred during the stormy weather on the 13th, with quite strong gusts occurring from the southeast in the morning, the northwest in the afternoon, and the east-southeast in the evening. The latter direction produced the highest gust of 33 knots (38 mph), with 22 knots (25 mph) from a similar direction during the early hours of the 14th.
Fog
Fog patches drifted across the area from the river estuary during the morning. Sea fog occurred for a while during the afternoon on the 30th.
