Temperatures
The average maximum temperature during October 2017 in Malaga was 24.7 Celsius (76F), and that was 0.9 Celsius (1.5F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 17.0 Celsius (63F), and that was normal for October.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 28.6 Celsius (84F) on the 13th, with 28.2 Celsius (83F) recorded on the 12th. There were a further 11 days when the temperature exceeded 25 Celsius (77F) with only 3 of these warmer days occurring after mid month. There were no especially cool days during October, but on 6 occasions the temperature failed to reach 23 Celsius (73F). All of these cooler days occurred after mid month, with the lowest value of 21.2 Celsius (70F) registered on the 18th. The 23rd, with a high of 21.7 Celsius (71F), was the only other day with maxima below 22 Celsius (72F).
There were no particularly warm nights during October, with the highest value of 20.4 Celsius (68F) recorded on the 7th. However, each of the first 5 nights of the month had lows above 18 Celsius (64F), with a further 5 nights having minimum temperatures exceeding 18 Celsius (64F). The last of these warmer nights occurred on the 20th. The nights were pleasantly cool after mid month, and although the temperature fell to 15.8 Celsius (60F) on the 11th, the other 7 cooler nights, with minima below 16 Celsius (61F), all occurred after the 18th. In fact, there were 6 of the last 7 nights of the month with lows under 16 Celsius (61F) with 3 of these nights having minima below 14 Celsius (57F). The lowest temperature was 12.7 Celsius (55F) on the 28th.
The sea temperature was 21 or 22 Celsius (70-72F) early in October, before falling to 20 Celsius (68F) around mid month. It remained at this very acceptable bathing temperature for the remainder of the month.
Rain
There were 36.3 millimetres (1.4 ins.) of rain during October. This was 65% of the monthly average. Rain fell on only 2 days, and that was 5 days below average. Rain was heavy for a while early on the 18th, before giving way to lighter showers. A total of 18.5 millimetres (0.7 ins.) were recorded and this was followed by an other pulse of heavy rain early on the 19th. The 17.8 millimetres (0.7 ins.) of rain proved to be the last of the month.
Hail
There were no reports of hail in west Malaga during October.
Thunder
There was a thunderstorm just before dawn on the 18th. It lasted for over an hour and was accompanied by many forks of lightning and rumbles of thunder.
Wind
The wind through October mainly followed a typical mid autumn pattern with northwesterly land breezes during the mornings, followed by southeasterly sea breezes, these usually dying away after sunset. The sea breeze was rather more prominent early in the month, with the land breeze dominating during the last 2 weeks of October. On most days the wind was light or gentle, but at the end of the third week the breeze was more squally, and on the 20th a northwesterly gust of 20 knots (23 mph) was recorded.
Fog
Patchy sea mist was observed in west Malaga on the 22nd, mainly, but not exclusively, during the afternoon.
