Temperatures
The average maximum temperature during October 2022 in Malaga was 25.0 Celsius (77F), and that was 1.1 Celsius (2F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 17.8 Celsius (64F), and that was 0.9 Celsius (<2 F) above normal for October. Overall, it was the warmest October for 8 years.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 29.8 Celsius (86F) on the 16th, with the next warmest day, the 25th, recording 27.7 Celsius (82F). However, there were 3 more days with maxima between 27 and 28 Celsius (81-82F). On most days (17) the highest temperature was between 23 and 26 Celsius (73-79F), but a few cooler days occurred, these mainly towards the end of the month. On 4 occasions the temperature failed to reach 23 Celsius (73F). On the 11th, a high of 22.8 Celsius (73F) occurred, with 21.9 Celsius (72F) recorded on both the 21st and 31st. However, the coolest day of the month was the 20th with a high of 20.7 Celsius (69F).
No particularly warm nights occurred during October, but the minimum temperature was 20.2 Celsius (68F) on both the 9th and 19th, with 20.0 Celsius (68F) occurring on the 10th. On most nights (19) the temperature fell to between 16 and 19 Celsius (61-66F), but there were a few cooler nights. On 5 nights, the temperature fell below 16 Celsius (61F), with 3 of these cooler nights occurring in the first week of October. On the 2nd, the temperature dipped to 14.8 Celsius (59F) but, unusually, it was the first night of the month that was coolest, with a minimum temperature of 14.6 Celsius (59F).
The sea temperature was around 15 or 16 Celsius during the first few days of the month, before rising to 19 or 20 Celsius (66-68F), where it remained for the rest of the month.
Rain
There were 2.2 millimetres (0.09 ins.) of rain during October. This was only 4% of the monthly average. It was the driest October since records began in 2005. It was also the driest early autumn (September and October) since records began, with only 3.8 millimetres (0.15 ins.) of rain falling. In October, overnight mist and dew deposited 0.2 millimetres (0.01 ins.) of ‘rain’ in the gauge on the 5th, but the first ‘real’ precipitation occurred on the 10th when showery rain in the morning amounted to 1.4 millimetres (0.05 ins.). Another 0.4 millimetres were added to the total when light rain occurred late in the morning and late in the evening on the 16th. Finally, light rain occurred in the early hours of the 21st and gave 0.2 millimetres (0.01 ins.)
Thunder
One rumble of thunder occurred late in the morning on the 10th.
Wind
The usual combination of northwesterly land breezes and southeasterly afternoon sea breezes occurred throughout the month. On some days, the land breeze was dominant and resulted in the highest temperatures. Conversely, days when there were early onsets of sea breezes the days were cooler. October was notable for a lack of any strong winds. The highest gust, from the southeast, was only 16 knots (18 mph). This occurred on the 4th and there were no other gusts above 13 knots (15 mph).
Fog
There was sea fog from mid afternoon on the 4th until the early hours of the 5th.
