Temperatures
The average maximum temperature during September 2019 in Malaga was 27.5 Celsius (81F), and that was 0.3 Celsius (<0.5F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 20.8 Celsius (69F), and that was 0.5 Celsius (1F) above normal for September.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 33.8 Celsius (93F) on the 25th. There were 2 other days when the temperature rose above 30 Celsius (86F). On the 3rd a high of 31.8 Celsius (89F) was recorded, and the temperature on the 2nd peaked at 30.8 Celsius (87F). On many days (14), particularly early in the month, the maxima were between 27 and 30 Celsius (81-86F). In fact, there were only 2 days during the first half of September, when the temperature failed to reach 27 Celsius (81F). Whereas. the second half of the month only had 4 days with highs above 27 Celsius (81F). There were no especially cool days during September, although there were 4 days when the temperature remained below 25 Celsius (77F). The last 4 days of September accounted for 3 of these cooler days, but the coolest day was the 12th with a high of 23.7 Celsius (75F).
The warmest nights were, not surprisingly, mostly towards the beginning of the month. There were 3 consecutive days, starting on the 5th, when the temperature stayed above 23 Celsius (73F). The warmest night was the 6th with a low of 23.9 Celsius (75F). There were a further 12 nights with lows above 21 Celsius, and 6 more with minima above 20 Celsius (68F). There were no particularly cool nights, but on 9 occasions minima were below 20 Celsius (68F), including 7 out of the last 9 nights of September. The lowest temperature was 18.2 Celsius (65F), and this occurred on 3 nights, the 24th, 29th and 30th.
The sea temperature fell steadily from a high of 25 Celsius (77F), at the beginning of the month, to around 22 or 23 Celsius (72-73F) mid month, and then more slowly to 20 or 21 Celsius (68-70F) at the end of September.
Rain
There were 45.7 millimetres (1.8 ins.) of rain during September, and that was over 70% above the monthly average. However, measurable rain only fell on 1 day, and that’s 2 days below the average. Rain fell overnight on both the 12th and 13th, but there was enough rain to measure. The first measurable rain since April 25th fell in the early hours of the 14th, and at times it became torrential with hourly rates briefly exceeding 600 millimetres. The heaviest rain appears to have fallen along the coastal strip around Malaga , with considerably less rain at the Airport and further to the west.
Thunder
There were 2 days of thunder, with the first thunder and lightning occurring to the northwest on the evening of the 7th. Although cloud thickened, no rain occurred with this storm. By way of contrast, the storm that rumbled on for around 4 hours on the 14th, was often violent with sustained and vivid lightning and loud thunder.
Wind
The wind was mostly light or gentle during September with the usual sequence of northwesterly land breezes during the mornings and southeasterly sea breezes during the afternoons. There were a few exceptions. During the second and third weeks the sea breeze was moderate at times, and on the warmest day of the month (25th). the land breeze persisted all day. Only 2 days had gusts exceeding 20 knots (23 mph), the 10th, when 23 knots (26 mph) were recorded, and the 14th, when the violent overnight storms produced a gust of 42 knots (49 mph), a new September record for this part of west Malaga (2005). At the Airport a gust of 47 knots (54 mph) was recorded .
Fog
There was fog, this lifting into low cloud and dispersing, for a while on the morning of the 28th.
