Weather in Malaga September 2023

              Warm and Very Dry

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during September 2023 in Malaga was 27.8 Celsius (82F), and that was 0.5 Celsius (<1 F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 21.0 Celsius (70F), and that was 0.6 Celsius (1 F) above normal for September. Overall, it was the second warmest September since records began in 2005; only the September of 2018 was warmer.     

There were no especially hot days during September, but the temperature reached 30.4 Celsius (87F) on both the 14th and 21st, and 30.3 Celsius (87F) recorded on the 12th. On most days (17) the maximum temperature was between 27 and 30 Celsius (81-86F), but there were cooler days, especially towards the end of the month. On 9 of the last 11 days of the month, maximum temperatures were below 27 Celsius (81F), but only 1 of these days, the 23rd, with a high of 24.6 Celsius (76F), had a maximum temperature below 25 Celsius (77F). Every day between the 1st and 19th had a maximum temperature above 27 Celsius (81F) with 1 exception. On the 3rd, a maximum temperature of 23.8 Celsius (75F) occurred, and this was the coolest day of the month.

No exceptionally warm nights occurred during September. Nevertheless, a minimum of 24.3 Celsius (76F) occurred on the 15th, with 24.1 Celsius (75F) recorded on the 9th. A further 3 nights, the 7th, 8th and 14th, had minima between 23 and 24 Celsius (73-75F). On most nights (17) the minimum temperature ranged from 20 to 23 Celsius (68-73F), but cooler nights occurred after the 17th. On 8 occasions, from the 18th, the temperature fell below 20 Celsius (68F), but only 2 of these cooler nights had minima below 18 Celsius (64F). On the 24th, a minimum of 17.8 Celsius (64F) occurred, followed by a low of 17.7 Celsius (64F) on the 28th, the coolest night of the month.  

The sea temperature was 26 or 27 Celsius (79-81F) at the beginning of the month, before lowering to 22 or 23 Celsius (72-73F),  where it stayed for the rest of September, apart from a brief dip to 19 Celsius (66F) at the end of the third week. 

Rain

A total of 3.2 millimetres (0.13 ins.)  of rain fell during September. This was 13% of the monthly average. Overall, it was the 6th driest September since records began in 2005. Measurable rain fell on 3 days, which is average for the month. Overnight showers on the 2nd gave 0.6 millimetres (0.02 ins.), with patchy rain, mainly falling during the morning, adding 0.8 millimetres (0.03 ins.) to the monthly total on the 3rd. It then remained dry until the evening of the 14th when brief bursts of heavy rain produced 1.8 millimetres (0.07 ins.). Rain also fell on the  evening  of the 18th, and in the early hours of the 22nd, but there was too little rain to measure. 

Thunder

Thunder was heard in association with showers before dawn on the 2nd, and during a burst of rain late in the evening on the 14th. 

Wind

Apart from on the 3rd,  when a fresh or strong east to southeasterly blew for much of the day, the month had the usual pattern of mainly light or gentle northwesterly land breezes overnight and during the mornings, followed by light or gentle southeasterly sea breezes from late morning until early evening. It was noticeable, as the days shortened, that the length of time the sea breeze occurred decreased, so that the southeasterly wind was dominant on 11 of the first 15 days of the month, but only on 1 day thereafter. Only 3 days had gusts above 20 knots. The east-southeasterly on the 3rd gusted to 27 knots (31 knots) and 21 knots (24 mph) occurred as the sea breeze began on the morning of the 13th. On the 22nd it was breezy all day with winds from a northwesterly direction and a peak gust of 21 knots (24 mph).

Fog

No fog was observed in this part of Malaga.
