Dry and Warm

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during September 2024 in Malaga was 27.7 Celsius (82F), and that was 0.4 Celsius (1F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 21.3 Celsius (70F), and that was 0.9 Celsius (<2F) above average for September.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 34.4 Celsius (94F) on the 9th, but a maximum of 33.8 Celsius (93F) occurred on the 4th, and 3 other days, the 1st, 23rd and 26th had maxima above 30 Celsius (86F). Overall, the first 9 days of the month were warmest , with each day having a high above 28 Celsius (82F). Each day from the 22nd to the 27th (inclusive) also had maxima above 28 Celsius (82F). All other days had highs below 28 Celsius (82F). However, the temperature failed to reach 25 Celsius (77F) on 3 occasions. The maxima on the 11th and 28th were 24.8 and 24.1 Celsius (77 and 75F) respectively, but the coolest day of the month was the 12th, when the temperature only rose to 23.1 Celsius (73F).

The very warm and humid nights continued into September. In fact, only the September of 2018 recorded higher average night-time temperatures during the last 20 years. The first night of the month was the warmest with a low of 25.7 Celsius (78F), but the following 2 nights each had minimum temperatures above 24 Celsius (75F). On most other nights (15) minima ranged from 20 to 23 Celsius (68-73F). However, there were 8 nights when the temperature dipped below 20 Celsius (68F). The 11th, with a low of 19.2 Celsius (67F), was the only cooler night before mid month, but only 3 of these coolest nights had a minimum below 19 Celsius (66F). The 17th had a low of 18.8 Celsius (66F), but the last 2 nights of the month were cooler with each night recording a low of 18.1 Celsius (64F).

The sea temperature was around 27 or 28 Celsius (81-82F) during the early part of September, but during the second week it decreased to 21 or 22 Celsius (70-72F), and dipped further to 19 or 20 Celsius (66-68F), during the last week, before recovering to 23 Celsius (73F) on the last 2 days of September.

Rain

There were 5.0 millimetres (0.2 ins.) of rain during September. This was 22% of the long-term average. Measurable rain fell on 3 days, and that was average for the time of year. The first 6 days of the month were dry, but outbreaks of rain occurred late in the afternoon and evening on the 7th. A total of 4.2 millimetres (0.17 ins.) was measured. A few spots of rain fell on the morning of the 14th, but the next significant rain occurred on the 17th, when a short-lived heavy shower gave 0.6 millimetres (0.02 ins.). A light shower produced 0.2 millimetres (0.01 ins.) on the following morning, and a few spots of rain fell on the morning of the 19th, but the remainder of the month was dry.

Thunder

A thunderstorm occurred late in the afternoon of the 7th and lasted for about 20 minutes.

Wind

Land breezes from the northwest dominated on most of the warmest days and southeasterly breezes were dominant on 19 days. On most days, the wind was light or moderate, and often fell calm in the evenings. Only 4 days had gusts above 20 knots (23 mph). The 5th was a particularly breezy day with 26 knots (30 mph) recorded as the land breeze reluctantly gave way to the sea breeze in the afternoon. The 27th had northwesterly gusts to 21 knots (24 mph), but the 18th and 28th both had several gusts of 20 knots (23 mph) or more from east-southeast. Peak gusts were 21 knots and 22 knots (25-25 mph) on the 18th and 28th respectively.

Fog

No fog was observed in this part of Malaga.
