The highest temperature recorded during the month was 22.2 Celsius (72F) on the 26th, but there were 3 other days, the 3rd,4th and 15th, when the temperature rose above 20 Celsius (68F). During the first half of January the temperature rose above 15 Celsius (59F) on each day, but on the 17th the temperature only rose to 13 Celsius (55F), the coolest day of the month, and there were then 4 further days, the 19th, 20th, 29th and 30th, when maxima failed to reach 15 Celsius (59F).
There were several mild nights during January, and on 4 occasions minima were above 13 Celsius (55F). The mildest night was the 14th/15th with a low of 13.8 Celsius (57F). There were 13 nights with temperatures falling below 10 Celsius (50F) including 5 consecutive nights beginning on the 5th/6th. However, only 7 of the cooler nights had minima below 9 Celsius (48F), and just 2 nights had low below 7 Celsius (45F). The 16th/17th had a minimum of 6.7 Celsius (44F), but the coolest night of the month was the 8th/9th when the temperature fell to 5.8 Celsius (42F).
The sea temperature occasionally dipped to 13 Celsius (55F) after rain, otherwise it remained at 14 Celsius (57F) throughout the month.
Rain in Malaga
There were 40.7 millimetres (1.6 ins) of rain measured during January, and this was about 60% of the long-term average for the area. Measurable rain occurred on 9 days, around 1 day more than normal. There was light rain early on the 4th, and a few spots of rain fell before dawn on the 11th with light rain during the afternoon. However, on each day the total was a mere 0.3 millimetres (0.01 inches). On the 13th, rain fell late in the morning and through until mid afternoon. A total of 3 millimetres (0.1 in.) was measured, but after light rain again on the 16th, more significant rain occurred on the 17th. Over 6 millimetres (0.2 in.) was collected in the rain gauge,with more than 5 millimetres (0.2 in.) on the following day. Heavy rain fell in the early hours of the 19th, and the 14 millimetres (0.55 in) measured made it the wettest day of the month. The 9 millimetres (0.4 in) of rain that was collected on the 22nd mostly fell overnight, as did the the 2 millimetres (0.1 in.) recorded on the 29th. The last rain of the month occurred on the morning of the 31st, but although it dampened the ground it was too light to measure.
Thunder
The only thunderstorms observed in west Malaga were over the sea to the southeast on the evening of the 17th with distant thunder and some vivid lightning displays.
Wind
It was a breezy January, but apart from on the 2nd, when winds were light and variable, and the 17th, when a moderate east-southeasterly blew, the direction was entirely from the northwest. On many days the wind was moderate or fresh, and on 15 days there were gusts in excess of 20 knots (23 mph), including 7 consecutive days from the 24th. On 2 of these breezier days there were gusts above 30 knots (34 mph), with 36 knots (41 mph) recorded on the 19th, and 35 knots (40 mph) measured on the 27th.
Fog
No fog was observed in west Malaga.
